11:49 a.m., Aug. 27, 2008----Did you know that approximately 80 percent of all children diagnosed with cancer can be cured?
UD researchers and the public are invited to attend the Nemours Childhood Cancer Awareness & Education Symposium Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13, at the DuPont Country Club, 1001 Rockland Road, Wilmington, Del.
Organized by Nemours/A. I. DuPont Hospital for Children and co-sponsored by the University of Delaware, the symposium will bring together experts from across the nation, including pediatric physicians, clinicians and scientists, for educational lectures and discussions on advanced concepts and technologies for improving health care for children with cancer.
On Friday, Sept. 12, the symposium presentations will focus on mechanisms of cancer metastasis, a major cause of cancer-related death; recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of adult prostate and breast cancers; and support for children when a family member has cancer. During the 4 p.m. session, Doug Doren, UD professor of chemistry and biochemistry, will present “Partnerships in Cancer Research with the University of Delaware.”
The presentations on Saturday, Sept. 13, will highlight new approaches to treating brain tumors, leukemia and lymphoma; pre-clinical research and clinical trials aimed at improving the treatment of childhood cancers; and current efforts to improve cancer prevention and control.
The symposium is free for families and members of the public; the cost for clinicians is $20 per day.
