Nora Lawrence, MoMA curatorial assistant, will present the lecture. Lawrence is the curator of "Beyond Matter," an exhibition of works by University of Delaware alumni on view at UD@Crane in the Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia.

The “Color Chart” exhibition was held at the MoMA in spring 2008, and it celebrated a paradox -- the lush beauty that results when contemporary artists assign color decisions to chance, ready made source, or arbitrary system.

Midway through the 20th century, long-held convictions regarding the spiritual truth or scientific validity of particular colors gave way to an excitement about color as a mass-produced and standardized commercial product.

“Color Chart” was the first major exhibition devoted to this pivotal transformation, and featured work by some 40 artists ranging from Ellsworth Kelly and Gerhard Richter to Sherrie Levine and Damien Hirst.
