The title of Togunde's lecture is “Recent African Migration to the United States: What Do We know and What Do We Still Need to Know?”

In his lecture, Togunde will examine the phenomenon of recent African migration to the United States and its implications for countries of origin and the U.S. He will also share with the audience, some of the most recent work he has done on this area of research.

Togunde is chairperson of the Department of Anthropology/Sociology and director of the Ethnic Studies Program at Albion College.

His academic work intersects the areas of African development, African demography, immigration, and Africans in U.S. diaspora.

Some of his publications have focused on how gender relations, family structure, and marital power shape women's employment and reproductive outcomes in Africa. He has published extensively on the determinants, patterns, and consequences of children's economic contributions to household survival strategies in Nigeria.

Part of his current scholarly work seeks to examine the extent to which globalization and Westernization impact intimate relationships in Nigeria. He is also currently co-editing a book, Across the Atlantic: African Immigrants in the United States.

He received his Ph.D. degree in development sociology from Cornell University.

The Distinguished Africanist Lecture is sponsored by UD's African Studies Program.
