What is your favorite memory from your time as an SNF Ithaca Student Leader so far?

One of my favorite memories as an SNF Ithaca Student Leader was traveling to Greece for the iMedD International Journalism Forum in Athens. I was able to partake on this amazing trip with SNF Chair of Civil Discourse and Director of the SNF Ithaca Initiative, Dr. Timothy Shaffer; Former Assistant Dean of External Relations, Sebastian Jannelli; and my fellow student leader, Lauren Boyd. This experience allowed me to engage in meaningful discussions about democracy, journalism, and civic engagement with students and professionals from around the world. It was incredibly inspiring to learn about different perspectives on different issues while exploring the importance of dialogue and political discourse.  

What do you plan to do after you graduate?

After I graduate, I plan to attend law school and pursue a career in civil law. Through my leadership experiences on campus and internships with the Court of Chancery and Senator Coons Office, I have found an interest in civil litigation and a passion for helping constituents with their concerns. I hope to continue developing skills necessary to serve others and make a meaningful impact in my community. 

How has the SNF Ithaca Initiative helped you become a more effective and engaged citizen? 

The SNF Ithaca Initiative has helped me become a more effective and engaged citizen by teaching me the importance of civil discourse, civic engagement, and collaboration across differences. Through campus conversations I have had the opportunity to serve as a facilitator in conversations as well as an active participant. This program has allowed me to grow my confidence in engaging thoughtfully in complex social and political issues while encouraging respectful dialogue. 

What challenges have you overcome since joining this program?

Since joining the SNF Ithaca Initiative, I have learned how to navigate difficult conversations involving complex social and political issues while remaining open-minded and respectful of differing perspectives. One challenge I overcame was becoming more confident in my facilitating abilities and learning to be more comfortable in uncomfortable conversations. This has helped me become a better active listener, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally.

What advice do you have for future students who want to grow as leaders and make a meaningful impact?

My advice for future student leaders is to step outside of their comfort zone and take advantage of opportunities that allow them to connect with others and develop leadership skills. Be creative in event planning and how they can engage more students across campus. Building genuine relationships, staying involved, and leading with empathy can make a lasting impact on both others and yourself.
