Undergraduate Awards
- Wallace H. Carothers Scholarship (1980)
This award, presented by an anonymous donor to a student in chemistry or
biochemistry, is to commemorate the achievements of this pioneer in polymer
chemistry. The $500 award, based on academic merit, has traditionally
been given to the student deemed to be our most outstanding sophomore
chemistry or biochemistry major.
- Quaesita Drake Scholarships (1975)
These awards of $1000 are given to two outstanding junior or senior women
who are chemistry and biochemistry majors, on the basis of academic accomplishment
and potential and excellence of character. The funds for this award were
obtained from gifts of alumni and alumnae to honor Quaesita Drake, chairperson
of the Women's College Chemistry Department for over 25 years.
- American Chemical Society Award in Chemistry (pre-
1965)
This award, given by the Delaware Section of the ACS, is given to a junior
chemistry or biochemistry major for outstanding scholarship and achievement.
The award consists of a year's membership in the ACS, a year's subscription
to one of the ACS journals and a cash prize of $500. Financial support
provided by the Alberta E. Edge Fund.
- Elizabeth Dyer Award for Excellence in Chemistry and Biochemistry (1989)
These $1000 awards are given to senior chemistry and biochemistry majors
in recognition of outstanding performance in one or more of the following
areas: scholarship, research and service to the Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry. The award honors Elizabeth Dyer, faculty member 1933-1971.
- American Institute of Chemists Award in Chemistry (1975)
This award is given to a graduating senior in chemistry or biochemistry
who, on the basis of a demonstrated record of leadership ability, character,
and scholastic achievement, has shown potential for advancement of the
chemical profession. The award includes a cash prize of $500. Financial
support provided by the Alberta E. Edge Fund.
- Merck Index Awards (1982)
These awards, presented by Merck & Co., Inc. to students who have demonstrated
both academic merit and the promise of future achievement in the field
of chemistry, include a cash prize of $250 and a copy of the Merck Index.
Financial support provided by the Alberta E. Edge Fund.
- Kevin Scott Beall Memorial Award (1994)
This award of $500 is presented to the most outstanding freshman majoring
in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. It is given in the memory
of a graduate of the Department who was killed in an automobile accident
in 1993.
- C. Frank Shaw III Undergraduate Award in Inorganic Chemistry (1992)
The award, presented by Dr. C. Frank Shaw III '66, Professor of Chemistry,
Illinois State University, is given for outstanding classroom and laboratory
performance in inorganic chemistry by an undergraduate chemistry or biochemistry
major. The stipend is $200.
- American Chemical Society Award in Analytical Chemistry (1993)
Presented by the Division of Analytical Chemistry of the American Chemical
Society to an undergraduate chemistry major for outstanding classroom
and laboratory performance in the area of analytical chemistry. The award
consists of a year's subscription to the journal Analytical Chemistry.
- Wallace H. McCurdy, Jr. Undergraduate Award in Analytical
Chemistry (2000, reconstituted 2007))
An award given to the graduating senior in the Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry who best exemplifies scholarship in analytical chemistry.
The award consists of an honorarium of $200. The award honors Wallace H.
McCurdy, Jr., faculty member 1959-1992.
- Joseph H. Noggle Undergraduate Award in Physical Chemistry (1999)
An award given to the graduating senior in the Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry who best exemplifies scholarship in physical chemistry.
The award consists of an honorarium of $200. The award honors Joseph
Noggle, faculty member 1971-1998.
- James A. Moore Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry (2000)
An award given to the graduating senior in the Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry who best exemplifies scholarship in organic chemistry.
The award consists of an honorarium of $200. The award honors Prof. James
A. Moore, faculty member 1955-1988.
- Frank W. Collins Undergraduate Award in Biochemistry (2002)
An endowed award given to the graduating senior in the Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry who best exemplifies scholarship in biochemistry. The
award consists of an honorarium of $200.
- Hypercube Scholar Award (1995)
An award presented by Hypercube, Inc. to a senior chemistry major who has
demonstrated academic excellence and significant involvement in computational
chemistry or molecular modeling. The award consists of Hypercube software
valued at $1,000.
- Carl A. von Frankenberg Undergraduate Award in Chemistry
Education (2005)
An award given to the graduating senior in the Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry who best exemplifies scholarship in, and the practice
of, chemistry education. The award consists of an honorarium of $200. The
award honors Carl von Frankenberg, faculty member 1961-1997.
- Gene J. and Frances E. Schiavelli Undergraduate Research
Fellowship (2005)
An award given to an undergraduate chemistry or biochemistry major who
shows special promise as a research scientist, as demonstrated by work
accomplished during his or her academic career. The award is currently
$500, and is supported by an endowment provided by Dr. Mel Schiavelli,
University Provost (1994-2001).
- Bryce Hach Scientific Foundation Scholarship Awards (2007)
Two annual awards ($6000 each) presented to outstanding undergraduate CHEM/BIOC/XCE
majors who are committed to careers teaching chemistry at the high school
level.
Graduate Awards
- Glenn S. Skinner Memorial Award (1968)
This award, in honor of Dr. Skinner, who was a very active member of the
Chemistry faculty 1928-1958, is presented for distinction in scholarship,
research, and service to the Department. The stipend is $2500.
- Elizabeth Dyer Awards to Graduate Teaching Assistants for
Excellence in Teaching (1982)
These awards recognize graduate teaching assistants in the department for
excellent achievement in the teaching of chemistry. The award includes
a cash prize of $225.
- Joel Silver Award Symposium (1973)
This award, in memory of Joel Silver, a graduate student killed in a traffic
accident in his last doctoral year, recognizes excellent achievement
in research as well as a highly professional presentation of results.
The award includes a prize of $300.
- Trofimenko Memorial Prize (2007)
This award, in memory of Dr. Swiatoslaw ‘Jerry’ Trofimenko,
creator of the polypyrazolylborate ligand system and visiting scholar in
the Department from 1996 until his death in 2007, is given annually to
a graduate student in the Department who has distinguished him/herself
in the area of ‘creative inorganic synthesis.’
SPECIAL NOTE:
Two scholarships (Kelly and Ludlum) are restricted to Chemistry majors and are
distributed by the Admissions Office.

Chemistry Award Challenge
Thank you to all who participated in the Chemistry Award Challenge. Due to the generosity of our alumni, faculty, staff and friends we raised $13,153.54. Both the Trofimenko Memorial Award and the Carl von Frankenberg Award have reached endowment status!
Easter Egg Hunt in the Chemistry StockroomFisher Scientific hosted another Easter Egg Hunt in the Chemistry Stockroom on Thursday March 20, 2008. Connie Smith, Senior On Site Specialist for Thermo Fisher prepared 70 plastic eggs containing numbers inside for corresponding prizes. Details
