Undergraduate Awards

  1. Kevin Scott Beall Memorial Awards (1994)
    These awards of $500 are presented to the most outstanding freshmen chemistry and biochemistry majors. They are given in the memory of a graduate of the Department who was killed in an automobile accident in 1993.
  2. Wallace H. Carothers Scholarships (1980)
    These awards, presented by an anonymous donor to students in chemistry and biochemistry, are to commemorate the achievements of this pioneer in polymer chemistry. The $500 awards, based on academic merit, have traditionally been given to the students deemed to be our most outstanding sophomore chemistry and biochemistry majors

  3. American Chemical Society Award in Chemistry (pre-1965)
    This award, presented by the Delaware Section of the ACS, is given to a junior chemistry or biochemistry major for outstanding scholarship and achievement. The award consists of a year’s membership in the ACS, a year’s subscription to one of the ACS journals and a cash prize of $500. Financial support provided by the Alberta E. Edge Fund.
  4. Quaesita Drake Scholarships (1969)
    These awards of $1500 are given to four outstanding junior or senior women who are chemistry and biochemistry majors, on the basis of academic accomplishment and potential and excellence of character. The funds for these awards were obtained from gifts of alumni and alumnae to honor Quaesita Drake, chairperson of the Women’s College Chemistry Department for over 25 years.
  5. Elizabeth Dyer Awards for Excellence in Chemistry and Biochemistry (1989)
    These $2500 awards are given to senior chemistry and biochemistry majors in recognition of outstanding performance in one or more of the following areas: scholarship, research and service to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The award honors Elizabeth Dyer, faculty member, 1933-1971.
  6. American Institute of Chemists Award in Chemistry (1975)
    This award is given to a graduating senior in chemistry or biochemistry who, on the basis of a demonstrated record of leadership ability, character, and scholastic achievement, has shown potential for advancement of the chemical profession. The award includes a cash prize of $500. Financial support provided by the Alberta E. Edge Fund.
  7. Merck Index Awards (1982)
    These awards, presented by Merck & Co., Inc. to students who have demonstrated both academic merit and the promise of future achievement in the field of chemistry, include a cash prize of $250 and a copy of the Merck Index. Financial support provided by the Alberta E. Edge Fund.
  8. Hypercube Scholar Award (1995)
    An award presented by Hypercube, Inc., given to a senior chemistry major who has demonstrated academic excellence and significant involvement in computational chemistry or molecular modeling. The award consists of Hypercube software valued at $1000.
  9. Gene J. and Frances E. Schiavelli Undergraduate Research Fellowship (2005)
    An award given to an undergraduate chemistry or biochemistry major who shows special promise as a research scientist, as demonstrated by work accomplished during his or her academic career. The award is currently $500, and is supported by an endowment provided by Dr. Mel Schiavelli, University Provost (1994-2001).
  10. ACS-Hach Scientific Foundation Scholarship Awards (2007)
    Two annual awards ($6000 each) presented to outstanding undergraduate CHEM/BIOC/XCE majors who are committed to careers teaching chemistry.
  11. Frank Collins Undergraduate Award in Biochemistry (2002)
    An award given to the graduating senior in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry who best exemplifies scholarship in biochemistry. The award consists of an honorarium of $400, provided by the Frank W. Collins Endowment.
  12. Wallace H. McCurdy, Jr. Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry (2000, reconstituted 2007)
    An award given to the graduating senior in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry who best exemplifies scholarship in analytical chemistry. The award consists of an honorarium of $400. The award honors Wallace H. McCurdy, Jr., faculty member 1959-1992.
  13. James A. Moore Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry (2000)
    An award given to the graduating senior in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry who best exemplifies scholarship in organic chemistry. The award consists of an honorarium of $400. The award honors James Moore, faculty member, 1956-1988.
  14. Joseph H. Noggle Undergraduate Award in Physical Chemistry (1999)
    An award given to the graduating senior in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry who best exemplifies scholarship in physical chemistry. The award consists of an honorarium of $400. The award honors Joseph Noggle, faculty member, 1971-1998.
  15. C. Frank Shaw III Undergraduate Award in Inorganic Chemistry (1992)
    The award, presented by Dr. C. Frank Shaw III ’66, Professor of Chemistry at Illinois State University, is given for outstanding classroom and laboratory performance in inorganic chemistry by an undergraduate chemistry or biochemistry major. The stipend is $400.
  16. Carl A. vonFrankenberg Undergraduate Award in Chemistry Education (2005)
    An award given to the graduating senior in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry who best exemplifies scholarship in, and the practice of, chemistry education. The award consists of an honorarium of $400. The award honors Carl van Frankenberg, faculty member, 1961-1997.
     

Graduate Awards

  1. Glenn S. Skinner Memorial Award (1968)
    This award, in honor of Dr. Skinner who was a very active member of the Chemistry faculty from 1928-1958, is presented for distinction in scholarship, research, and service to the Department.  The stipend is $3000. 
  2. Elizabeth Dyer Awards to Graduate Teaching Assistants for Excellence in Teaching (1982)
    These awards recognize graduate teaching assistants in the department for excellent achievement in the teaching of chemistry.  The awards include a cash prize of $300-$600, depending upon the number of awardees each year. 
  3. Joel Silver Symposium Award (1973)
    This award, in memory of Joel Silver, a graduate student killed in a traffic accident in his last doctoral year, recognizes excellent achievement in research as well as a highly professional presentation of results.The award includes a cash prize of $300.
  4. Trofimenko Memorial Prize (2007)
    This $500 award, in memory of Dr. Swiatoslaw ‘Jerry’ Trofimenko, creator of the polypyrazolylborate ligand system and visiting scholar in the Department from 1996 until his death in 2007, is given annually to a graduate student in the Department who has distinguished him/herself in the area of ‘creative inorganic synthesis.’
  5. E. Brennie E. Hackley, Jr. Award for Excellence in Research (2009)
    This award of $2000 is given to a graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in research. It honors the memory of Dr. Brennie E. Hackley, Jr. (UD Ph.D. ’57), who devoted his remarkable 57-year career at the Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center, Aberdeen, MD Proving Grounds to the development of medical antidotes to chemical warfare agents.

SPECIAL NOTE: Two scholarship programs (Kelly and Ludlum) are restricted to Chemistry and Biochemistry majors, and are distributed by the Office of Financial Aid.
