The mission of the University of Delaware’s Chemistry and Biochemistry Department is to advance discovery and education:

  1. by preparing students at all levels in chemical principles, in the tools of problem solving and research

  2. by preparing science students to contribute to societal efforts to produce energy, fight disease, and produce new materials.

  3. by contributing to the liberal arts education of all University of Delaware students

  4. by developing innovations in curriculum and pedagogy to promote the above.

 

Graduates of the Chemistry, Biochemistry and Chemical Education Programs of the University of Delaware will have demonstrated the following:


  1. the ability to apply major concepts, theoretical principles and experimental findings in chemistry and biochemistry to the solution of problems — General Education Goal #2 (Critical Thinking)


  2. the ability to employ appropriate research methodologies to collect, analyze and interpret data toward the solution of a problem General Education Goal #1 (Critical Thinking, Quantitative Reasoning)
  3. the ability to conduct a literature review to identify a research problem and develop a plan for its solution General Education Goal #'s 1 and 2 (Information Literacy, Critical Thinking)
  4. the ability to critically evaluate methodologies, data and conclusions of other's technical work General Education Goal #2 (Critical Thinking)
  5. the ability to use computers for chemical computations, data acquisition, general eEducation and data base searching General Education Goal #1 and #2 (Information Literacy, Information Technology and Quantitative Reasoning)
