Openings and Closings

Opening

Residence halls will open for first year students on August 24, 2013 between 8am and 4pm.  All other students may move into their residence hall on August 25, 2013 from 9am-6pm, and on August 26, 2013 from 11am-3pm.

Early Check-in

You may check-in early to your residence hall at a rate of $50.00 per night. Early check-in occurs on either Thursday, August 22, 2013 from 5-9pm for both freshman and returning students, or Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 8am-4pm for returning students. Please know there is no check-in available on Friday, August 23, 2013. If you would like to check-in early to your residence hall, please check back in early June for early check-in registration. please register.

Major Break Information

Spring Break

Spring break begins on March 22, 2013, with halls closing at 7pm. Residence halls will reopen on March 31, 2013 at noon.

Thanksgiving Break

Thanksgiving break begins November 26, 2013 and residence halls close at 7pm. Halls will reopen on December 1, 2013 at 2pm.

Winter Break

Winter break begins December 13, 2013 and residence halls close at 10pm. Halls reopen on February 9, 2013 from 2-9pm, with room change period for students on campus during Winter Session from 9am-noon.

Winter Session

Residence hall check-in for Winter Session walk-ins is 9am-3pm on January 6, 2014. Students leaving after Winter Session must check-out of residence hall by 7pm on February 8, 2014.

Break Housing

Residence halls (except Christina Towers) close for three breaks throughout the school year: Thanksgiving, Winter Break, & Spring Break.   Students may request break housing for an additional fee in the following locations:

  • Independence Complex (Independence East & West, Thomas McKean, James Smith)
  • George Read
  • Harrington/Smyth
  • Russell/Lane/Thompson
  • Ray Street
  • Central Complex (Warner, Sussex, Squire, New Castle, Cannon, Kent, Brown, Sypherd, Harter, Sharp)

*Rodney and Dickinson is not available for break housing.  If you are a resident of Rodney or Dickinson and you are unable to make other arrangements you may contact Housing Assignment Services at 302-831-3676.

Closing

Residence halls will officially close for the school year on May 23, 2013 at 10pm. 

If you are a graduating senior or have an official role in commencement, you may checkout on May 25, 2013 at 6pm.  To do so, you must make a request to your Residence Hall Coordinator/Hall Director. More instuctions will be emailed to students closer to commensment.

  • 24 Quiet Hours
    • 24-Hour Quiet Hours begin at 8pm on Tuesday, May 14 and continue through 8am Friday, May 24th. Please be respectful of others in your building and cooperative with your neighbors and staff if asked to quiet down. Please be aware that the staff will be referring noise violators through the Office of Student Conduct.
  • Building Closing
    • Residence Halls will close at 10pm on Thursday, May 23. Unless you are participating in the commencement exercises in a formal University role, or are a graduating senior, you must vacate your residence hall within 24 hours of your last final. If your last final ends at 10pm on Thursday May 23, you may stay in the building until 10am on Friday, May 24, but you must make arrangements to do so with your Residence Hall Coordinator/Hall Director/Complex Coordinator no later than Monday, May 13. This includes graduating seniors and those participating in commencement.

      Graduating seniors and students working at commencement may remain in their rooms/apartments until 6pm on Saturday, May 25.
  • Keys and Access Cards/Fobs
    • All keys and access cards/fobs must be returned to the location at times designated by the Hall Director, before you leave campus. You must return the access card/fob that was originally signed out to you. Access cards will be deactivated at 10pm on Thursday, May 23 unless you have made prior arrangements with your Residence Hall Coordinator/Hall Director. You will be billed if you fail to return these items to the designated location before you leave campus.

      Keys/Access cards will not be accepted after the halls close. If you fail to return your key or Access Card/FOB you will be charged $80.00 per key and $18.00 per Access Card/FOB.
  • Closing Checklist
    • • Reassemble all University furniture and place in its original location. 
Beds must be reassembled to the proper position, i.e. Rodney lofts should be in the original position, bunks should be debunked and inverted, and beds should be reassembled.

      • Replace screens, hang drapes and leave drapes open.

      • Remove all personal belongings. On Friday, May 24, Facilities Management Staff will begin removing all items in the residence halls. The University cannot store personal belongings or guarantee their security. You will be billed for removal or special clean-up of personal belongings.

      • Remove all posters and adhesive backed decorations from furniture, walls, ceilings and doors. Clean all surfaces. Remove poster putty from the wall after taking down pictures.

      • Thoroughly clean personal bathrooms and kitchens.

      • Return all lounge furniture to its proper location.

      • Clean room furniture. Remove any personal carpet or carpet tape and sweep the floor.

      • Please bag trash and take it to the dumpsters located throughout each complex. Please recycle as appropriate.

      • Leave your air conditioning unit on a medium setting (where applicable). When ready to leave, close and lock windows, lock your room and turn your key and access card/fob at the desognated location.
  • Room/Apartment Condition
    • The final check-out service provided by Residence Life staff is extremely important to you for both financial and for convenience reasons. Each RA will conduct a pre-closing meeting to provide specific instructions. Please attend!

      To prevent damage billing or trash removal charges you must see an RA prior to your departure to have your room inspected. Facilities Management staff makes final billing decisions for damage or trash removal in individual rooms and apartments. Billing for common areas such as bathrooms, hallways, lounges, etc. will be equally divided among residents if the parties responsible are not identified. Billing will be sent out during the summer.
  • Refrigerator and Microwave Rentals
    • If you have rented a refrigerator, microwave or combo unit, please leave it in your room.

      If you have moved or transferred the unit please email Campus Specialties, or visit their website; otherwise a fee may be assessed. If the unit cannot be found, you will be billed for a replacement unit.

      Units will be picked up after buildings have been closed.

      To avoid additional cleaning/damage charges, units must be:
      1. 1. Left inside your room: Placed unit in the middle of the room away from personal property.
      2. 2. Have no personal items on or in the equipment (stereo equipment, books, stickers, magnets, food).
      3. 3. Fully defrosted: (defrosting takes 24 hours) Do not use any sharp objects to defrost the unit. Empty the drip tray under the freezer compartment.
      4. 4. Completely clean and dry: This includes seals and inside/outside surfaces of the refrigerator, freezer and microwave.
      5. 5. Returned with all parts: Ice cube trays, shelves, microwave plate and ring.
      6. 6. Left with the refrigerator and freezer doors open.
      Failure to comply with any of the above criteria will be reasonable cause to charge a $25 cleaning fee. Contact Campus Specialties with any questions or problems.
  • Lofts
    • Bed Loft Return Procedure

      • Leave the loft fully assembled in your room.

      • A member of the Bedloft.com staff will retrieve the unit the week following finals.

      • A replacement fee of $400.00 will be billed to you if we are unable to regain possession of the loft. Feel free to contact Bedloft if you have any questions.
  • Mail
    • United States Mail will be delivered to the residence halls through Thursday, May 24. The University will forward First-Class mail delivered after that date to the permanent address you have on file at the Registrar's Office. If the permanent address listed for you at the Registrar's Office is not current, you should make arrangements to update it as soon as possible. You can do this by submitting a change of address form at the Student Services Building, by using UDSIS on the web or by calling Pat Shields at 831-2727. Campus Mail cannot forward newspapers, magazines, and periodicals. If you wish to receive them during the summer, please notify the publishers of your summer address.
  • Email
    • If you are not returning to the University of Delaware next Fall, please forward your UDel email to an email account that you can access.

  • Parking, Loading, and Unloading
    • When loading and unloading vehicles, students should park at a paid meter or in a lot for which they have a permit. If you must be in a fire lane or driveway, a licensed driver is required to be with the vehicle at all times. Contact Parking Services at 831-1184 for further information.
  • Housing for 2013-2014
    • For information about availability and applications, contact Housing Assignment Services. On campus information and listings for off campus rentals can be found at www.udel.edu/has.
