Welcome to the University! UD professional employees enjoy an outstanding benefits package that includes a myriad of services. The following brief outline is provided to acquaint you with the various plans and services available to UD full-time professional staff members. More detailed information is available to you from UD Benefits Services.
The University of Delaware Benefits Program provides opportunities for employees to tailor benefits to meet their personal need.
Employees have four plans from which to choose their medical coverage: two traditional insurance plans, Basic and Comprehensive, through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware; and two health maintenance organization (HMO) plans, Coventry Health and Blue Care. The following coverage options are available: employee only, employee and spouse, employee and child(ren), or family.
Employees and their eligible dependents may enroll in the Dental Expense Assistance Plan which affords coverage for preventive, restorative, and orthodontic services.
Five employee life insurance options are available: $10,000, $50,000, $100,000, 2 times salary, and 4 times salary. Employees can also purchase life insurance for eligible dependants.
There are two options for income replacement during periods of total disability. The standard option replaces 60 percent of salary and the high option replaces 66 2/3 percent of salary.
Health care and dependent day care flexible spending accounts enable employees to pay for medical and child care expenses on a pre-tax basis.
The University offers a variety of programs and educational opportunities for employees and eligible dependents, including programs to assist with college tuition costs.
Full-time employees may be reimbursed up to $175 per year ($87.50 for part-time) for out-of-pocket costs of routine physicals, eye and hearing exams, prescription eye glasses, contact lenses, and hearing aids.
UD employees may participate in the Blood Bank of Delaware.
Faculty and Professional staff participate in the University retirement program through TIAA-CREF and Fidelity Investments. Employees contribute 4 percent of salary and the University contributes 11 percent. Contributions are immediately vested and tax-deferred.
Salaried and Hourly staff participate in the State of Delaware Pension Plan. Both the University and employee contribute to this plan. Benefits are vested after 5 years of participation. The pension benefit at retirement is based on creditable service and the highest three years of salary.
All employees may make personal, tax-deferred contributions to the supplemental TIAA-CREF and Fidelity Investments programs.
Contributions are through payroll deduction.
The University's Wellness Program encourages employees to maintain healthy lifestyles. Full-time employees are provided $50 ($25 for part-time) to spend on approved UD wellness activities. Campus wellness resources include:
Information about wellness activities and programs is available at the University's Wellness Center. Fitness classes, nutrition counseling, health screenings, seminars, and weight management classes are samples of available programs.
Cardiovascular conditioning and weight training equipment is available, free of charge, to all UD employees and spouses.
Employees with personal problems, including substance abuse and family concerns, can receive counseling support.
Full-time Professional and salaried staff accrue 22 days vacation per year. These employees also accumulate sick leave for use in time of illness or disability. Vacation and sick leave for Hourly staff are governed by union contract.
