UD Community: Shopping

  • The large supermarkets are generally the cheapest for food and household goods. Prices will vary a little among the different supermarkets and also according to location. The supermarkets closest to the University are: (1) Acme - Elkton Road (2) Pathmark - College Square Shopping Center and (3) Super Fresh - Fairfield Shopping Center.
  • The mini-markets are convenient because of their location and hours but are much more expensive.
  • Newark Oriental Grocery, Elkton Road - not just oriental groceries, but food from a lot of different countries.
  • Newark Community Cooperative (the Co-Op), 280 East Main Street - a natural food store that is co-operatively owned and operated by its members. Products are free of artificial ingredients. They also have a wide range of ingredients from many different countries. You can become a member ($5.00 per semester for students) or buy as a non-member. Non-members pay 25% more than the prices you see on the goods. To be a member, collect an information sheet from the store.
  • Clothing - Christiana Mall. D.A.R.T. bus service is available to the Mall: get schedule from the Student Center Information Desk & OISS.
  • General shopping - There are many other specialty shops on Main Street and also in the Newark Shopping Center at the end of Main Street.
