The effects of the winter storm have prompted a delayed start time of 10 a.m. Tuesday for operations and in-person instruction
As a result of the weekend’s winter storm, the University of Delaware has made the following alterations to its operations and in-person academic instruction for Tuesday, Jan. 27, at its Newark campus:
The University will operate with a delayed opening.
In-person instruction at the Newark campus will begin at 10 a.m. Instructors of Winter Session classes scheduled to meet prior to 10 a.m. are encouraged to communicate with their students, as these sessions may convene virtually (either through synchronous or asynchronous formats), or be rescheduled at an instructor’s discretion. Instructors of classes scheduled to meet after 10 a.m. have the discretion to move to a different format as desired. Flexibility is appreciated, as these measures prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and faculty while ensuring academic continuity.
Essential personnel should report to work Tuesday, as scheduled. With prioritization of safety and personal circumstances, non-essential employees should use discretion in consultation with their supervisors in determining whether to report to campus at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Employees should consult with supervisors to make contingencies for remote-work assignments, as needed.
Transportation services will be available beginning at 10 a.m. Monitor the Transportation website or Shuttle app for updates.
Regarding parking, those traveling to UD’s Newark campus are encouraged to park their personal vehicles within University Parking in permissible areas (e.g., avoiding handicap spots, fire lanes), and campus parking enforcement during the week will be suspended. Please be mindful that this does not include City of Newark parking zones. Comply with all fire‑lane and accessible‑parking regulations both on and off campus.
Residence and dining halls remain open to students. The University asks all on-campus resident students to close and lock all windows, as even a slightly open window can lead to frozen and broken pipes during this ongoing stretch of extreme cold weather. The Caesar Rodney Dining Hall will remain open Tuesday for its regular hours of operation. For additional information, including hours of operation at retail locations, visit the Dining Services website or the Instagram account for UD Dining Services.
Members of the University community are reminded to use caution while driving on or navigating campus.
Other campuses and areas
UD’s Lewes campus and the Paradee Center in Dover will operate beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Administrative staff at the University’s other UD campuses and locations will continue monitoring and provide updates to their respective populations, as appropriate.
Schedule updates
Regarding Student Wellbeing, patients with appointments at Student Health Services, Sports Medicine and the Center for Counseling and Student Development prior to 10 a.m. Tuesday will be contacted to reschedule. Read more information on how to access after-hours and 24/7 medical- and crisis-care support.
The Carpenter Sports Building (Little Bob); UD’s Rust and Gold ice arenas; Morris Library; the Student Centers; the Wellbeing Center at Warner Hall; Clayton Hall; and the UD Barnes & Noble Bookstore will open at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Information about any additional closings or schedule changes will be posted on UDaily.
Personal safety
Safety is UD’s highest priority. Faculty, staff and students should not put themselves at risk, and employees who expect difficulty traveling should contact their supervisors.
The National Weather Service warns that temperatures and wind chills are projected to plunge below zero the entire week. These temperatures may create slick driving and walking conditions, as melted snow and ice could re-freeze after sunset. Exercise caution and allow extra time for commutes.
Stay up to date on the University’s winter weather procedures.
Review the University’s extreme weather and emergency conditions policy.
Check the status of Delaware's weather-related driving restrictions.
As of 10 a.m. Monday, New Castle and Kent counties have moved to a Level 1 driving warning. Sussex County’s Level 1 warning has been lifted.
