Seniors choose gift of green

ON THE GREEN | Did you know blue and gold make green? The Class of 2009 does.

This year’s seniors voted online in February to determine their class gift—the first step in creating their legacy and leaving a lasting mark on UD. The winning idea was a donation of solar panels to supply future students with clean, renewable energy on campus.

“The Class of 2009 will use this eco-friendly contribution to act as pioneers in the University’s efforts toward sustain ability,” says Heather Barron, senior associate director of annual giving. “They will be a pillar for positive, ecological change which further exemplifies UD as an environmental leader and role model.”

She describes the gift as “the perfect continuation” of the Class of 2008 carbon footprint project, as the solar panels will implement plans derived from the carbon footprint inventory.

“The Class of 2008 used their gift to identify the issues,” Barron says. “The Class of 2009 has now committed to being a part of the solution.” Nikhil Paul, class chair for the 2009 gift committee, said the panels also represent “the importance of giving back to UD.”

Barron says the goal is to raise $50,000 in donations, with 25 percent participation from the class. Seniors can show their support and help make the gift a reality by visiting www.UDconnection.com/seniorclass.
