Honors

The UD chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda music honor society nominated Jennifer Margaret Barker, professor of music, for the 2018 Pi Kappa Lambda Chamber Music Commissioning Project this past June. This grant is awarded every two years. This process is rigorous and lengthy – nearly 10 months from nomination to selection. Barker advanced past the nomination round and was invited to submit scores and recordings for consideration this fall, and this week she was selected for the commissioning grant. She is in excellent company with past winners, such as Cynthia Folio and Jennifer Higdon. The work will be premiered on Nov. 17, 2018 at the PKL annual convention, which also marks the honor society’s 100th anniversary.

New appointments

The University of Delaware Police Department has hired three new police officers, all of them graduates of the Delaware State Police Academy. Lance Chandler retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserves after 32 years of service, eight of them on active duty, and he was a master corporal with the Dover Police Department for more than 22 years. Brandon Smith, who holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from UD, is certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and has held positions as a cadet and security officer with the UD Police Department. Christian Swann, a graduate of Delaware Technical Community College and a current UD student, has previously worked at UD Police as a cadet and as a seasonal officer with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
