Newark Police investigate theft from student on West Main Street

The Newark Police Department is investigating a theft from a University of Delaware student that occurred at 11:54 p.m., Tuesday, Jan.16, on the porch of the Deer Park Tavern at 108 West Main Street.

The victim, a 31-year-old male UD student, reported that he was on the porch when he was approached by a man who asked him for money. Due to a language barrier, the victim was unsure why the suspect was asking him for money. The victim removed his wallet from his pocket, and the suspect grabbed it out of his hand and fled. The suspect was seen entering a red passenger car, which was parked in front of the Deer Park Tavern and left westbound on West Main Street.

The suspect was described as a black male with a thin build, wearing a black jacket, jeans and black and white shoes. The car in which he fled had two additional occupants, one of them a white female with blonde hair. Newark Police have released a surveillance image of the vehicle.

A UD Alert was issued about this incident just after 1 a.m., Jan. 17. The alert mistakenly indicated that the suspect said he was armed with a handgun and that it was a robbery.

Anyone with information regarding the theft should contact Officer Roberts at JRoberts@newark.de.us or 302-366-7100 extension 3493.
