Recognitions

An article written by Julie Stewart, communications specialist II in the College of Engineering, on “Marking Better Material for Fuel Cells” was among the most popular articles to appear on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science homepage in 2017. The article, which highlights the work of a team of UD engineers to make fuel cells cheaper and more durable, originally appeared on UDaily on Sept. 4, 2017. Other top articles for the year came from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rice University, UCLA and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Accomplishments

The “Big Data” in Railroad Maintenance Planning 2017 conference was held at the University of Delaware on Dec. 14-15. Organized by the Railroad Engineering and Safety Program, Big Data Center and Professional Engineering Outreach, the fourth annual conference brought together railroad industry experts to discuss the need for effective, practical maintenance planning, as well as the latest techniques for gathering, analyzing and efficiently converting large volumes of complex data into useful information. Allan M. Zarembski, professor of practice and director of UD’s Railroad Engineering and Safety Program, and Nii Attoh-Okine, professor and director of the Big Data Center, co-chaired the conference, and the keynote speaker was Wick Moorman, president of Amtrak. Technical talks were divided into topical sessions, including: Railroad Needs from Big Data, Railroad and Government Big Data Applications, Railway Asset Management, Applications and Case Studies, “Big Data” and Analysis Theory and Techniques.

Honors

Members of the University of Delaware’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS) were recently honored with four national awards In recognition of their high-quality design, communications and marketing work, at the annual University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) Marketing and Enrollment Management Seminar in Washington, D.C. Winners were selected from hundreds of entries in 26 categories across eight divisions, from print publications to mixed media campaign to strategic recruitment marketing plan. Members of the UD PCS marketing and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute teams earned a gold award in the Print Publications Catalog/Tabloid category for the Fall 2017 Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Wilmington Catalog. The marketing team also earned a gold award in the Mixed Media Campaign category for UD PCS’ “Invest in YOU!” campaign and two silver awards for their Fall 2017 Educational Opportunities Guide and their 2016 Impact Report. UD PCS Marketing and Communication Manager Steven Kendus attributed the awards to teamwork and collaboration within and across the teams. “Producing top-quality, appealing and effective marketing and communications pieces takes the skill, effort and subject matter expertise of various people,” Kendus said. “Our strong team of planners, writers, designers, reviewers and strategic thinkers consistently work together to create useful messages and communications pieces for our audience of non-traditional learners.”

In fall 2017, Wendy Smith, associate professor of management, and John D’Arcy, associate professor of management information systems, were named the first-ever Deutsch Faculty Fellows in the Lerner College of Business and Economics. Robert ’80 and Kathy Deutsch ’80 created the Faculty Fellows Fund to support faculty recruitment, retention and research. Smith is currently leading a study on the paradoxical leadership and has published a recent Harvard Business Review article in this area. She’s also been published in Academy of Management Journal and Organization Science and Management Science. D’Arcy’s research interests include information assurance and security, IT risk management and computer ethics. He’s published in MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, among others, and is an associate editor at MIS Quarterly and Decision Sciences.
