Workshop series on teaching research

Join fellow instructors to explore how to enhance students' research skills

Teaching individuals how to be savvy researchers provides them with a skill set they can use throughout life. But there are many challenges inherent with teaching research methods and skills to undergraduates.

TRUE-Workshop Series

University of Delaware instructors and faculty interested in helping their students become better researchers can join a cohort of instructors for the Teaching Research in Undergraduate Education (TRUE) Workshop series, occurring each Wednesday from Feb. 21 to March 21. Throughout the five workshops, participants will discuss topics such as developing research topics, searching strategically, evaluating sources and synthesizing sources.

As part of the cohort, those attending will discuss difficult places in the research process and identify concrete teaching techniques to ensure students succeed. Each installment of the series will feature an activity and a group discussion, generally addressing issues including ways to integrate research instruction throughout a course, rather than just one unit; to draw connections between different parts and skills within the research process; and to adapt an activity for different levels of students and subject areas.

The series will provide a supportive environment for instructors to reflect on and share their approaches to teaching research. By the end of the series, those attending will walk away with several activities to use during their class sessions to enhance their students’ research abilities, as well as a certificate of completion from the Department of English.

Those who join the cohort must attend at least four of the five interactive workshop sessions. This series is open to all University of Delaware instructors, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and other early career professionals.

All sessions will meet at the Faculty Commons (116 Pearson Hall), from 2-3:30 p.m. every Wednesday between Feb. 21 and March 21, with the exception of March 7, when the session will take place in Morris Library. The series is a collaboration between the English department and the UD Library, Museums and Press.

Those interested in exploring ways to transform their students into skilled researchers may register online for the TRUE Workshop series.
