Employers, alumni offer winter opportunities for students

UD students participate in internships and job shadowing

More than 70 employers and alumni offered experiential learning opportunities to University of Delaware students during this past Winter Session. One hundred students participated in the winter internship and job shadow programs, coordinated through UD’s Career Services Center. These students received real-world experiences working directly with employers to learn more about their career interests.

Between balancing classes, jobs, extracurriculars, athletics, other responsibilities and obligations, many students are unable to take advantage of internship or job shadow opportunities during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Winter Session is a great option for busy students who still wish to take on an experiential learning opportunity to boost their resume and make meaningful connections with employers in their field.

Jenna Whiting, a first year business management major, wrote, “I had the opportunity to get an inside look at jobs that I could very possibly pursue in the future, and that I could make connections with my hosts, who were all extremely kind, helpful, and knowledgeable.”

UD students made a huge impact on employers this winter. Michael Meliniotis (‘94 Computer Science graduate), owner of The Melini Group, said, “Based on what I experienced this winter, I am willing to change my future staffing strategy to include more UD talent. I regret that I wasn’t involved prior to 2016. The commitment, professionalism, and aptitude levels of the interns exceeded my expectations and was truly impressive.”

Taking initiative and making a positive impression on employers can have a huge payoff when students enter the job market. Lauren N. Friedman, director of sales at Barometric (2005 graduate from CAS), said, “It was certainly the highlight of my month. We are all going to remain in contact and I told them that I am happy to help make intros to whomever they need when they are ready. I have a pretty extensive network at this point in my career and am always happy to help, especially those who are getting started professionally. Because it is brutal out here in the real world.”

This program, only in its second year, had a major increase in both student and employer interest. Winter Session is a time that can be utilized by students to take charge of their careers. For more information on this and other programs and events check out the Career Services Center website.
