Sept. 28: Horn Entrepreneurship Open House

UD students, faculty, staff invited to Venture Development Center

University of Delaware Horn Entrepreneurship is hosting an open house at the Venture Development Center (VDC), 132 East Delaware Ave., from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28, for students, staff and faculty interested in entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation. The event marks the beginning of the program’s five-year anniversary celebration, and attendees can taste a free sample of the customized UDairy ice cream flavor, EntrepreneurChip.

Guests can explore offerings like Entrepreneurial Studies and Social Entrepreneurship minors, Entrepreneurship and Technology Innovation major, Entrepreneurship and Design master’s degree and venture support programs for creative and innovative students, faculty and staff. Opportunities are available for students in all majors and colleges.

“Entrepreneurship is creating, delivering and capturing value from new ideas,” said Tricia Monnig, academic adviser for Horn Entrepreneurship. “Anything from new programs, products, services to new businesses and social ventures fall under the umbrella of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship and innovation span all industries and the minor works really well to enhance any degree program.”

The Entrepreneurial Studies minor enhances any major through hands-on learning and provides students with adaptable skill sets for their future. The Social Entrepreneurship minor focuses on leading change in the student’s community and beyond.

“I have found entrepreneurship to be one of my passions, and I know that I will be taking what I learned with me throughout my career,” said Elizabeth Soulas, College of Engineering, Class of 2016. Soulas participated in venture support programs, including the exclusive pre-accelerator program, Summer Founders.

“Horn Entrepreneurship teaches you how to lead, innovate and stand out no matter where you go,” said Hannah Sporer, Entrepreneurship and Technology Innovation, Class of 2017. Sporer recently received and accepted a position at a publicly traded insurance company after completing an internship with it.

“My ENTI major has helped me maximize my skills and adaptability in a rapidly evolving job market,” said the author of The World Changer’s Handbook, Zack Jones, Class of 2017.

Students who are interested in learning about entrepreneurship at UD and the opportunities it offers are encouraged to attend the open house.
