Newark Police investigate unlawful sexual contact

Newark Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect in an unlawful sexual contact incident that occurred early Sunday morning, Oct. 29.

Newark Police responded to the unit block of East Main Street at approximately 12:21 a.m., Oct. 29. A 28-year-old woman from Wilmington, Delaware, was in the area of a food cart when an unknown white male forcibly grabbed her on the buttocks from behind, pushing her into the food cart. The suspect left the area on foot and may have grabbed another unknown person. The victim is not a University of Delaware student.

The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s, wearing tan cargo shorts, a long sleeve pale orange shirt and black and white shoes.

Newark Police have released a surveillance photo of the suspect and are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying him.

Anyone with additional information regarding this incident should contact Officer Corey Spencer at 302-366-7100 extension 3485 or corey.spencer@cj.state.de.us. Anonymous tips cam be texted to 302NPD with the message to TIP411. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1‐800‐TIP‐3333 or via the internet at www.tipsubmit.com, where a reward may be available.

Safety tips

UD Police shared the following safety tips:

  • Avoid walking alone at night. Walk with a group, ride a UD shuttle bus or call 302-831-2222 for a walking escort.
  • Show a confident attitude and be alert and aware of your surroundings. Follow common sense safety precautions at all times.
  • Report all suspicious activity by calling 911 from on or off campus.
