The UD Faculty Commons Book Club will meet at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 11, to discuss Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead by Tara Mohr.

This session will be facilitated by Pam Cook, Unidel Professor of Mathematical Sciences and co-principal investigator of the UD ADVANCE grant, and Lynnette Overby, professor of theater and dance and deputy director of UD's Community Engagement Initiative.

The UD Faculty Achievement Program is partnering with the Faculty Commons Book Club to sponsor this discussion of Playing Big.

Here’s how author Mohr describes her book: “Five years ago, I began to see a pattern in my work: Women with tremendous talent, ideas and aspiration often didn’t see their own brilliance. Too often, they were sitting on their big ideas rather than sharing them, holding back their most provocative questions rather than asking them. I recognized the same thing in myself. I started on a journey to understand why women were playing small and what helps us play big, from the inside out. In this book, I share with you the tools I’ve used with thousands of women to help them take big steps forward in their lives and careers.”

The selection of Playing Big is intended to resonate with programming offered through the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD). Briefly, the NCFDD FSP Alumni Program for spring 2017 includes a multiweek class led by Mohr. This course is only available to those registered in the spring 2017 session of the alumni program, but all interested UD faculty are welcome to come engage in the book club discussion of the book, which coincides with the timing of the course.

Limited free copies of the book will be awarded to participants based upon registration, and winners will be contacted via email. Copies may also be purchased at a 30 percent discount from the Barnes and Noble UD Bookstore.

In addition, a printed copy may be available for loan from the UD Library. The library also has a book on reserve behind the Morris Library Circulation and Reserve Desk, which can be checked out. The book club reserve course is called FCOM 999 (Faculty Commons Book Club) and has the call number 289790X. Give the Circulation and Reserve staff the call number or ask for assistance in looking up the call number. The loan period is three days in order to make it available to as many borrowers as possible during the next few weeks.

The meeting for this book is scheduled from 11 a.m.-noon, Tuesday, April 11, in Faculty Commons, 116 Pearson Hall. Drinks and dessert will be provided. RSVP is requested.
