March 16: DENIN symposium

UD community welcome at DENIN graduate research symposium

The University of Delaware community is welcome to attend the second graduate student research symposium sponsored by the Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) on Thursday, March 16, in the Patrick T. Harker Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory.

The symposium begins at 5 p.m. with concurrent oral presentation sessions in rooms 305 and 307 of Harker Lab. The presentations will be followed with a poster session and reception in the atrium from 6:15 to 7 p.m.

In addition to the 10 oral presentations, approximately 45 students have signed up to present their research at the poster session. Prizes for the best posters will be awarded at the conclusion of the event.

“Graduate students are engaging in some amazing environmental research in many different areas around the University,” said DENIN director Don Sparks. “We were excited to see the variety of disciplines represented at this year’s symposium.”

See the event webpage for complete information. The schedule of oral presentations will be as follows:

In 305 Harker Lab

• Kristen Yoshimura, Marine Science and Policy, Particle-Associated Microbes Along a Natural Salinity Gradient.

• Molly Ashur, Marine Science and Policy, Specialized Habitat Selection of Reef Shrimp Based on Chemical and Morphological Cues.

• Julie Steinberg, Marine Science and Policy, Policy Routes for Marine Debris Management in the United States.

• Kyra Kim, Geological Sciences, Spatial Characterization of Reactivity in an Intertidal Beach Aquifer.

• Olivia Gulledge, Environmental Science, Wesley College, The Effect of Dramatic Sea Level Rise on Tree Ring Anatomy of Deceased Atlantic White Cedars.

In 307 Harker Lab

• Kathy Boone, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mode of Action Models and Linear Free Energy Relationships to Predict the Aquatic Toxicity of Organic Compounds.

• Alicia Broderick, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Water at the Ionic Liquid Vapor Interface Using Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy.

• Jenn Fang Su, Civil and Environmental Engineering, The Effect of Interfacial Structure on Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction Exemplified by Metallic Sn-Pd Catalysts Over Stainless Steel Support.

• Mario Guevara, Plant and Soil Sciences, Soil Organic Carbon Mapping at the Continental Scale.

• Emily Aiken, Geography, Climate Extremes Over the U.S. Mid-Atlantic States: A Regional Approach.
