April 13: 'Russia and the United States'

Alumnus, Pulitzer Prize-winner David Hoffman to speak at Mitchell Hall

Pulitzer Prize-winning author and University of Delaware alumnus David E. Hoffman will discuss “Russia and the United States: A New Cold War?” at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 13, in Mitchell Hall on the University’s Newark campus. The lecture is free and open to the public. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP online

Hoffman, who grew up in Delaware, was editor of the student newspaper The Review, when he was a student at UD. He joined the staff of The Washington Post in 1982 and served as White House correspondent during the Reagan and George H.W. Bush presidencies. After serving as bureau chief in Jerusalem and Moscow, he returned to the Post’s Washington office in 2001 as foreign editor. He currently serves as contributing editor and as a member of the Post’s editorial board.

His first book, The Oligarchs: Wealth and Power in the New Russia, came out in 2002. His 2009 book, The Dead Hand: The Untold Story of the Cold War Arms Race and Its Dangerous Legacy, earned the Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction. The Billion Dollar Spy: A True Story of Cold War Espionage and Betrayal, his most recent book, was released in 2015. 

Hoffman has been correspondent for three documentary films on public health for the PBS investigative television series Frontline.  

The April 13 program is sponsored by the Delaware Humanities Forum and the journalism program at UD. It is the final event in the Delaware Humanities Forum’s celebration of the centennial of the Pulitzer prizes.
