UD catcher Steinmetz named CAA softball player of weekh

University of Delaware sophomore catcher Anna Steinmetz has been named the Colonial Athletic Association softball player of the week for her outstanding performance at the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG) Spartan Classic.

Steinmetz posted a team-high eight hits in 12 at bats during the tournament, helping the Blue Hens win all four games and improve to 6-12 on the season. She hit two home runs at the invitational, scored three runs and drove home six.

Steinmetz had one hit in Friday’s 9-8 win over Campbell, before finishing 3 for 3 with an RBI in the 8-7 victory over UNCG later that day. She belted a game-winning grand slam during the top of the seventh inning during the 5-4 triumph over Winthrop on Saturday, and capped her weekend by going 2 for 3 with a home run in the 9-7 win over Campbell that afternoon.

Steinmetz now leads the CAA with five homers on the year, while her 40 total bases rank third and her .375 batting average is tied for tenth. Her two home runs on Saturday gave her 20 for her career, tying her for second place in UD history along with teammate Mariah Kondravy and just three shy of the school record.

Steinmetz shared CAA player of the week honors with Megan Good of James Madison, while Kiandra Mitchum of Elon was named the pitcher of the week and Odicci Alexander of James Madison picked up rookie of the week honors.
