April 6: Arab music

Concert to feature acclaimed ensemble Layaali

The Arabic Program in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures will host an evening of Arabic Music at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 6, in the Roselle Center for the Arts on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, aims to introduce Arabic art and culture to the UD community and broader audiences of Newark. The performance will feature a selection from the modern repertoire of Arabic music.

Performing will be Layaali, a Massachusetts-based group of musicians from Lebanon, Syria, Morocco and Palestine whose love of and dedication to Arabic music have earned them acclaim from both ethnomusicologists and audiences at sold-out performances throughout the U.S. and internationally.

The ensemble is committed to performing the traditional music of the Arab world and to preserving the rich legacy of Arabic culture. Layaali has appeared at such U.S. universities as Harvard and Yale and at Club Passim, The Iron Horse, Whitney Center for the Arts and other concert venues.

The event is sponsored by the Office of the Provost, Institute for Global Studies, Center for Global and Area Studies and the departments of Political Science and International Relations, Music, Anthropology, Women and Gender Studies, and Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
