10 UD rowers selected CRCA national scholar-athletes

The University of Delaware rowing squad has placed 10 members on the Collegiate Rowers Coaches Association (CRCA) national scholar-athlete squad.

The list of outstanding Blue Hen scholars includes senior Carly Alexander, senior Claire Brown, junior Courtney Burnham, junior Laura Donohue, junior Mia Natale, senior Hannah Scholes, sophomore Sarah Shaffer, junior Emma Spillman, senior Kaitlyn Thomesen and junior Elizabeth Weglein. 

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have at least sophomore eligibility, have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and competed in a minimum of 75 percent of her team’s races during the spring. 

UD’s contingent was among 44 student-athletes recognized among the six Colonial Athletic Association institutions. 

Alexander, Brown, Spillman, Thomesen and Scholes each competed for the Blue Hens’ varsity eghts boats at the CAA championships while Natale and Shaffer were part of the second varsity eights, Burnham and Weglein were part of the third varsity eights crew, and Donohue rowed for the varsity fours contingent. 

UD placed fourth at the CAA championships May 14 at Pennsauken, New Jersey, just a day after placing all six competing crews into the finals at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia. 

Alexander is a health behavior science and health science occupational therapy double major; Brown, a first team All-CAA selection and team co-captain, is an economics and finance double major; Burnham is an exercise science major; Donohue is a pre-vet medicine and animal biosciences and wildlife ecology conservation double major; and Natale is an exercise science major.

Scholes, who was UD’s representative on the CAA All-Academic team for rowing, is an environmental engineering master’s graduate; Shaffer is a marketing and management information systems double major; Spillman is a neuroscience major; Thomesen is a quantitative biology and economics double major; and Weglein is an apparel design major.
