Honors

Lori Pollock, professor of computer and information sciences, has accepted an appointment as co-chair of the Computing Research Association's Committee on Education (CRA-E). This committee of 11 computer science professors from across the country aims to foster the next generation of computing researchers by promoting undergraduate research, helping faculty nurture talented students and encouraging undergraduates in computing fields to go beyond a bachelor’s degree. For example, the committee’s annual CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Researchers awards go to students with great potential for computing research. CRA-E partners with NCWITNSF, CRA-W and CCC to achieve their goals. In her new role, Pollock joins co-chair Susanne Hambrusch, professor of computer sciences at Purdue University.

Presentations

Michael O’Neal, associate professor in the Department of Geological Sciences, was an invited guest on a panel at the Biggs Museum of American Art that discussed “Ansel Adams: Artist, Environmentalist, Romantic.” O’Neal shared his perspective on photography as a source of important geological and environmental data, as well as observations from teaching undergraduates in the GEOL 306 Geoscience Field Methods course, which travels to many landscapes Adams made popular. The Biggs Museum exhibit, Ansel Adams: Early Works, closes Sunday, July 30.

Matthew Weinert, associate professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations, was invited to speak at the United Nations' High Level Event on Human Security and its Contribution to Agenda 2030 on July 7. The ambassadorial-level event explored how human security can "help strengthen strategies, tools and partnerships to accelerate integrated and preventive actions towards achieving Agenda 2030" and the Sustainable Development Goals. Weinert's remarks focused on culture and cultural heritage as drivers of development and highlighted the destructive effects of deliberate assaults on intangible and tangible cultural heritage.
