Engineers Week: Dreaming big

EWeek '17 events celebrate imagination, discovery

The University of Delaware's celebration of National Engineers Week is under way, with a kickoff carnival today and a full week of events meant to highlight the innovative work UD students and their collaborators are doing.

UD's engineers are putting their skills to work to address problems in a wide range of fields here and around the world. Consider these four examples – all of them senior design projects – now highlighted on the University's Tumblr page:

Floating wetlands, a portable structure designed to improve water quality and beautify a pond or other natural area.

• A special chair for infants with the brittle-bone disease called osteogenesis imperfecta.

• A lightweight training device for wheelchair racing athletes in Ghana.

• A wearable device with realistic materials and electronic sensors to train health professionals and others in care for colostomy patients.

A full schedule of the week's events – including a math challenge, Quizzo, a build-a-thon and the ever-popular, late-night broomball – is available online.
