Legal Studies Program announces brown bag lunch speaker series

The University of Delaware Legal Studies Program has announced a brown bag lunch series that will begin with a presentation at 12:20 p.m., Wednesday, March 1, in 348 Smith Hall.

Wayne Batchis, associate professor of political science and international relations and director of the Legal Studies Program, will speak on “The Political Party System as a Public Forum: The Incoherence of Political Parties as Free Speech Associations and a Proposed Correction.”

The Supreme Court has utilized the First Amendment to strike down electoral reforms intended to improve on the political party system. Batchis will discuss and critique the court’s current political party jurisprudence and propose and alternative approach.

The series will continue with a presentation by George Draper, professor and chair of the Department of Philosophy, on “Torture and the Law” at 12:20 p.m., Wednesday, April 5, in 348 Smith Hall, and by Jennifer Lambe, associate professor of communication, on “The Problem of Hate Speech” at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 3, in 231 Pearson Hall.
