Alumni news

UD alumnus Craig M. Cutler created the cover photo illustration in the Feb. 19 edition of The New York Times Magazine, for the story “Will Obamacare Really Go Under the Knife?” Cutler, who earned his bachelor’s degree in the Department of Art and Design’s visual communications program in 1983, is a photographer and director who owns Craig Cutler Studio in New York City.

Awards

Dan Watson, head athletic trainer and assistant director of athletics, has been honored by the National Athletic Trainers Association for his service to the organization and the outstanding work in the profession.  Watson, who has served at the University for the past 12 years, was selected to receive the Athletic Training Service Award. This prestigious national award recognizes NATA members for their exceptional contributions to the profession and the Association as well as their participation and leadership on the local and state levels. Members are eligible for this award after 20 years of membership and certification. NATA award recipients will be recognized during the General Session at the 2017 NATA Convention in Houston on June 28. “This is a special honor and I am grateful to be recognized on the national level for my service, leadership, and advancement of the Athletic Training profession,” said Watson. “We take great pride here at the University of Delaware in our reputation as one of the top athletic training programs in the country and none of this could be accomplished without the extraordinary dedication and passion of our athletic training staff and students.”

Books

Cathy Wu, Unidel Edward G. Jefferson Chair of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, is co-editor of a book, Protein Bioinformatics: From Protein Modifications and Networks to Proteomics, recently published by Springer. Co-edited by Cecilia Arighi and Karen Ross, the book is described as “cutting-edge and thorough,” and “a valuable resource for readers who wish to learn about state-of-the-art bioinformatics databases and tools, novel computational methods, and future trends in protein and proteomic data analysis in systems biology.” The book is aimed at researchers who work in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries and in various academic departments, such as biological and medical sciences and computer sciences and engineering. Each chapter includes an introduction, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step readily reproducible laboratory or computational protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. In addition to her faculty appointments in the departments of Computer and Information Sciences and Biological Sciences, Wu is director of the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (CBCB) and director of the Protein Information Resource (PIR).

Heinz-Uwe Haus, professor of theatre, has published three of his poetical plays under the title Die Macht und der Verlust der Seele (introduction and essay by Klaus M. Schmidt, University of Salzburg, Austria) at Mackinger Verlag, Bergheim, Austria. First reviews focus on the entanglements of society with the principles of power. Guenther Ruether of the University Bonn in Germany, writes, “The venture of this book lies in its attempt to establish a relationship between the grand stories of our recent memory, 1945, 1989, 2001. No one can doubt these lines of connection.” (Literaturkritik.de, Feb. 2, 2017). Daniel Meyer-Dinkgraegraefe of Lincoln University, United Kingdom, says, “Writing about the past is part of coping with trauma, of dealing with those traces. Writing about the past is also a way of ensuring the past is not forgotten so that the same mistakes cannot be made again. The three pieces by Haus … bear witness to this. They are an important document of history.” (Anef, Nr. 1, 2017, Nicosia, Cyprus).

Media

Rudi Matthee, John and Dorothy Munroe Distinguished Professor of History, was interviewed for a BBC TV documentary titled “The Secret History of Shiraz Wine.” The program was shown on Feb. 3 and 4.

Molly Olney-Zide, project manager and interim head, Center for Digital Collections, and David Cardillo, library assistant II, also in the Center for Digital Collections, University of Delaware Library, are quoted in a Feb. 16 News Journal article on the Delaware Digital Newspaper Project (DDNP). The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant funded project to participate in the National Digital Newspaper Program is focused on digitizing early historical American newspapers (1690-1963) and making them freely-accessible to the public.
