UD prepares to welcome new Blue Hens
“Tip number one: try everything. There are so many opportunities here on campus and I promise, if you try things, you’ll find the one that’s meant for you.”
Madisyn Steinberg, UD Class of 2020
Many new University of Delaware students have anxiously awaited 1743 Welcome Days since they drove away from their new student orientation, and the day to return has almost come.
Students’ extended orientation to UD began with an early August email and video in which sophomore Madisyn Steinberg encouraged them to try new things, document their favorite experiences, and push themselves to grow as Blue Hens while having fun. 1743 Welcome Days, planned by the Division of Student Life within New Student Orientation, aims to help them begin these suggestions immediately with opportunities to connect with their new community, explore all that UD has to offer, and consider how they will contribute during their time here. Though the first weekend is packed with 1743 festivities, welcome celebrations extend through the first few weeks of fall semester.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to help welcome the newest flock at major 1743 events:
Saturday, Aug. 26 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.: Move-In
Residence hall move-in for on-campus (residential) students will take place on Saturday before the evening brings Campus Breakout: The Preview of Perkins Live | Trabant Now. Faculty, staff, and current UD parents are invited to serve as Blue Hen Helpers to assist new families moving their students into a residence hall.
Sunday, Aug. 27 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on the central Green: Puppy Playdate
Faculty and staff are invited to mingle with new students and puppies at this event with Canine Companions for Independence at UD, offered as part of the 1743 Wellness Hour.
Sunday, Aug. 27 from 4:45-6:30 p.m. in front of Carpenter Sports Building: Blue Hens Bike Newark
Faculty and staff can grab their bike and join new students for a guided tour with Bike Newark, who will introduce good cycling spots and practices as part of the 1743 Wellness Hour.
Monday, Aug. 28 from 4-6 p.m. at Perkins Student Center West Lounge: Lavender Welcome Reception
This annual event welcomes all LGBTQ+ and Allied students, faculty and staff to the campus community and helps new lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer students meet others and learn about UD’s commitment to inclusive excellence.
Monday, Aug. 28 from 7-8 p.m. on the south Green: Twilight Induction Ceremony
All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the Twilight Induction Ceremony, an annual favorite which signals the conclusion of UD’s formal welcome weekend celebration. Participants will enjoy words from senior administrators and student leaders and a musical performance before a stunning candlelit ceremony. Faculty and staff who want to assist in the candle-lighting ceremony should sign up online by August 25, 2017.
