May 1-4: Holocaust Education Week

Hillel to mark Holocaust Education Week with events that emphasize unity, education

Hillel at the University of Delaware will mark Holocaust Education Week on the Newark campus with a series of events from May 1-4 emphasizing unity and education.

Activities will include a flag display on the North Green, reminiscences from a Holocaust survivor and a silent march in commemoration of those who perished.

Shoshanna Lustig, a junior at UD, participated in the planning and execution of the week's events, and she has been involved in the planning of Holocaust Education Week with Hillel at UD since she was a freshman. Like many others, Lustig had family members who perished in the Holocaust, and she has been passionate about this topic since childhood. One of her former teachers, survivor Ann Jaffee, will be sharing her story during this year’s events.

Starting early in the morning on Monday, May 1, Lustig and other students will install a flag display on the North Green, with different colored flags symbolizing the many minorities that perished during the Holocaust. This display will be on view all week.

Other scheduled events include:

• Monday, May 1: Six for six Ceremony, a six-hour name-reading ceremony honoring the 6 million Jewish people who were killed in the Holocaust, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Trabant University Center patio.

Tuesday, May 2: Religious Refuge, with Rabbi Michael Beals of Congregation Beth Shalom in North Wilmington discussing the importance of religious refuge, 5 p.m. in Room 101 Brown Laboratory.
