UD catcher Brian Mayer named CAA baseball player of week

For the first time in his career, University of Delaware senior catcher Brian Mayer has earned Colonial Athletic Association player of the week honors.

Mayer is the third different Blue Hen to receive a CAA player or pitcher of the week award this season, joining sophomores Nick Patten and Brandon Walter.

Mayer batted .533 (8-15) with four home runs, two doubles, six runs scored and 13 RBI during the Hens' undefeated (4-0) week.

UD opened the week with a 10-9 win over Penn on Wednesday and followed with a weekend sweep over CAA rival Hofstra, winning games by scores of 8-4, 17-7, and 11-4.

Mayer produced back-to-back games with two home runs, contributing six runs batted in on Saturday and four on Sunday against Hofstra. The catcher has produced a hit in each of his last six games and raised his batting average to .375 for the season.

He shares this week's conference awards with University of North Carolina Wilmington freshman Zarion Sharpe, who was named pitcher of the week, and Northeastern’s Scott Holzwasser, who was named rookie of the week.
