University Library offers workshop on use of rare books, manuscripts

The University of Delaware Library will offer a workshop titled “Special Collections Revealed: Using Rare Books and Manuscripts” on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The workshop will feature rare items available for research or for instruction by faculty members and graduate students.

Examples from major collecting areas will be presented, including English, Irish and American literature; women’s studies; African American studies; the history of science and engineering; horticulture; design; political science, and more.

Sample exercises/assignments from previous courses will be shared.

There will be a behind the scenes tour of Special Collections.

The workshop is open to the entire UD community. It will be held from 2-3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the Library Instruction Room, 116A, on the first floor of the Morris Library.

Presenters will be Curtis Small, senior assistant librarian and coordinator, Public Services, Special Collections Department, and Jaime Margalotti, associate librarian, archival description librarian, Manuscripts and Archives Department.

The workshop is offered at no charge. Seating is limited and registration is required. For a complete listing of workshops and to register online, go to this website.

All visitors to the Morris Library need to have photo identification to enter the building, e.g., a UD ONEcard, a U.S. driver’s license or a government-issued or school-issued photo ID. Frequent visitors to the Morris Library, who are 18 years of age or older and who do not have a ONEcard, may visit the Circulation and Reserve desk to register and have their photo taken for a free Library Frequent Visitor card. Once received, this ID can then be used with the card reader at the turnstiles for easy access to the building.
