UD Global Month

World of opportunities offered throughout month of November

The University of Delaware Institute for Global Studies invites students, faculty, staff and the greater UD community to explore the world during UD Global Month, which will take place throughout the month of November.

The month features more than 30 films, lectures, festivals, concerts and events designed to highlight the cultures, politics, food and environments of countries across the globe.

In addition, Global Month also serves as a time to celebrate the more than 4,000 international students, scholars and their family members who call UD “home.”

An annual event, Global Month coincides with International Education Week (IEW), a joint collaboration between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education. This year, IEW will take place from Nov. 14-18 across the United States.

This year’s IEW theme, “Empowering Youth through International Education,” resonates at the University of Delaware, which is known as the first to found a study abroad program in the U.S. and continues to be a leader in the field.

On Tuesday, Nov. 1, Global Month will officially kick off at 7 p.m. with an international-themed Quizzo at the Perkins Student Center Gallery. Students will have the opportunity to answer pop-culture trivia questions to earn a prize. Co-sponsored by University Student Centers and Residence Life and Housing, the evening will include refreshments and high-spirited competition.

Other events include the Office for International Students and Scholars’ weekly International Coffee Hour, offered each Friday from 4-6 p.m. at Old College Hall, regularly scheduled tours of the University Museums’ exhibition "The Ese'Eja People of the Amazon: Connected by a Thread,” and the Center for Global and Area Studies’ “Politics of Global Food and Health” lecture series.

Students will also have the chance to explore a multitude of ways to go global throughout their UD careers and beyond. On Friday, Nov. 4, a Global Service and Scholarship Panel will feature representatives from the Peace Corps, Fulbright, UD Study Abroad, Delaware Diplomats Program, Engineers without Borders, BuildOn and more.

On Wednesday, Nov. 9, IGS will host a Fulbright Information Session. Students who attend are invited to stay on for the third annual UD Fulbright Society Reception. This year’s reception will honor the Fulbright Program’s 70th anniversary and UD community members celebrating milestone anniversaries of their own Fulbright awards.

The next night strikes a lighter note with the third annual showing of the movie UP! Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to grab their seat for the 7 p.m. showing in Trabant Theater.

International Education Week

Beginning on Monday, Nov. 14, many parts of campus will transform with an international flair. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. UD’s Pencader and Russell Dining Halls will offer a daily “Global Feast,” highlighting Caribbean, German, Indian and Southeast Asian cuisines.

Also on Monday, Nov. 14, IGS will present “Maximizing your Study Abroad Experience: Strategies for Culture Learning,” exclusively for UD students preparing to study abroad in winter or spring 2017.

Tuesday, Nov. 15, will feature a timely talk on “Brexit” sponsored by the European Studies Program and IEW Faculty Workshops in the University’s residence halls.

On Wednesday, Nov. 16, the Career Services Center will present an International Student Employer Panel Discussion and global employer networking night.

From 5-7 p.m., the University community should plan to join the College of Arts and Sciences International Artist in Residence Program for “Return to Roots,” an open celebration of community, creativity and cross-cultural connection featuring a variety of interactive installations inspired by the work of artist-in-residence and art therapist Krupa Jhaveri, visiting from India, and in collaboration with students from various departments at UD. This event will take place in the Taylor Hall Gallery.

The Office of Residence Life and Housing will also host their International Bazaar, a global arts and crafts and food festival. Those who attend are encouraged to share their experience using an exclusive Global Month Snapchat filter.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, the UD Library and Institute for Global Studies invite students planning to study abroad to take part in “Study Abroad Storytelling 101,” a one-hour symposium on digital storytelling around the world.

International Education Week and Global Month will come to a close with two Office for International Students and Scholars signature programs, the fourth annual International Student Essay Contest Reception on Friday, Nov. 18 and a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for more than 350 international students, scholars and their families on Sunday, Nov. 20.
