Entrepreneurship for high schoolers

Horn Program offers first dual enrollment program for high school students

The University of Delaware’s Horn Program in Entrepreneurship is introducing a new series of one-credit courses that bring entrepreneurship into high school classrooms.

Malvern Preparatory School, MOT Charter School, William Penn High School and Wilmington Charter School will offer the pilot program.

“Currently, it's pretty rare for high schools to offer classes in entrepreneurship,” said Julie Frieswyk, the Horn Program’s manager of youth programs. “But we do see an interest from both teachers and students, so we are meeting that demand.”

Through the dual enrollment program, students will experience courses on topics ranging from how to generate and kick-start creative ideas to developing networking and leadership skills, all while earning both high school and University credit.

“It’s an excellent opportunity for students to really learn about themselves and about how they approach problems,” Frieswyk said. “It's also a good way for students to signal themselves as college-ready, and to really stand out in those college applications.”

Not only are the courses offered through the dual enrollment program widely beneficial for students, but they are also flexible for teachers to implement into their classrooms.

The courses, which are web-based through the Canvas learning management system, include a variety of videos, articles, quizzes and assignments that teachers can integrate into their classrooms however they choose.

“We really work with the school to come up with a program that will fit their needs,” Frieswyk said. “The teacher at the school can decide how they want the course material delivered in the classroom.”

Those interested in bringing these courses to their schools are encouraged to contact the Horn Program at hornprogram@udel.edu or 302-831-4393 to discuss a plan that will work specifically for their school and needs.

“Here at the Horn Program, we feel an obligation and a responsibility to prepare students to thrive regardless of their chosen path,” Frieswyk said. “We provide the tools for students to create their own path.”

Dual enrollment is one program of the Paul and Linda McConnell Youth Entrepreneurship Education Initiative.
