Oct. 26: 'Women Entrepreneurs'

UD’s Bullough to discuss resilience among women entrepreneurs

The University of Delaware’s Amanda Bullough, recipient of the 2015 Faculty Research Award funded by the Mae and Robert Carter Endowment in Women’s Studies, will present “Women Entrepreneurs: Building Resilience and Reducing Fear through Business Ownership” at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26, in Bayard Sharp Hall.

The presentation is part of the Department of Women and Gender Studies’ Fall Lecture Series.

Scholars have recently been learning how women’s perceptions about culture and adversity affect their business decisions, but less is known about how entrepreneurial activity in turn affects their perceptions of adversity. Is there something about engaging in entrepreneurship that causes women in adverse environments to become more or less fearful; does she feel more emboldened as a business owner?

Building on her previous research in countries like Afghanistan, Bullough will discuss her newest data on women entrepreneurs’ perceptions of danger and adversity, domestically (Chicago) and abroad (Pakistan).

Bullough is assistant professor of management in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics. Her research spans entrepreneurship, leadership, organizational behavior, cross-cultural management, and international development.

Bullough publishes in premier journals like the Journal of Management, Academy of Management Perspectives, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and Leadership Quarterly. She serves on the editorial review board for Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and has presented at numerous international business and management conferences.

Her newest streams of research include entrepreneurship in war zones and under adverse conditions, global leadership, and women’s entrepreneurship and leadership.

Her teaching experience includes organizational behavior, global leadership, international business, entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, multicultural teams, professional development, international business and business plan consulting, to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Bullough has done work in Finland, China, Thailand, Afghanistan, Jordan, Mexico, Algeria and many other countries. She also has consulted on projects with the World Bank, the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women program, and the Global Business School Network (GBSN).
