UD student utilizes entrepreneurial skills to revitalize new club sport

Davis Pfund, a junior entrepreneurship technology and innovation major, launched the first kronum club at University of Delaware in spring 2015. Since its start, the club has grown to more than 100 members.

“Kronum is a new, very fast-paced hybrid sport combining soccer, basketball and handball on a circular field with four goals,” Pfund said.

Kronum was invented by Bill Gibson, who developed a professional league, but the sport got its start at Towson University with the help of Pfund’s friend, Skyler Jenkins, and spread to other college campuses.

Just a few years later, the professional league fell, and kronum was left to just recreational teams. With this, Gibson eventually closed the online store, leaving kronum players frustrated with their inability to purchase new equipment.

“Our balls are getting torn up and we can’t buy new ones; we need more jerseys and we can’t buy any,” Pfund said. “We are kind of just running on what we have left, and it’s a little frustrating.”

Like any good entrepreneur would, when Pfund noticed a problem, he thought of ways he could take action to fix it.

After seeking advisement from members of the Horn Program in Entrepreneurship and other UD staff, Pfund found the solution he was looking for.

“[I was] told to write up...some sort of business model that could outline the growth and structure of how kronum can move forward, so I am currently working on that,” Pfund said.

With his business model, Pfund hopes to attract investors who are willing to invest in kronum so that the sport can thrive, gain new members both on and off campus and so that those who are passionate about the game can continue to play with the equipment they need.

Students who are interested in joining the team can visit the team’s StUDent Central page to get more information about the club, obtain contact information or request membership.
