University of Delaware Parking Services will be implementing several changes this fall, highlighted by virtual parking permits.

Virtual parking permits will work in conjunction with the license plate recognition (LPR) system initiated last year.

The system is designed to benefit customers by not requiring the hanging of permits, having multiple vehicles registered and making possible auto-renewal permits for benefited staff via payroll deduction.

Essentially, the license plate of the vehicle becomes the parking permit.

In addition to virtual permits, changes include:

• Perkins Student Center parking garage will change to a gateless location with six pre-pay self-service kiosks throughout the garage. Hourly customers will pay at one of the six kiosks at the time they park using their license plate instead of paying in the lobby when leaving. Parking for Perkins permit holders in the garage will not change, except they will no longer need to swipe or tap their UD ONEcard.
• Full-time benefited UD employees who purchase annual permits via payroll deduction have the option of signing up for an auto-renewal permit. If they choose the auto-renewal permit option when registering for 2016-17 parking their 2017-18 parking permit would automatically renew requiring no intervention by the employee.
• The license plate of the vehicle must face the drive lane when parking in campus parking lots. For Delaware residents, the state Division of Motor Vehicles will allow a second plate to be purchased for a small fee.
• Daily and monthly parking permits will be available to purchase online.
• Lot No. 55W; next to the ROTC building on Wyoming Road, will be changed to lot No. 57 and exclude resident student storage parking but remain a gray-east lot.

Parking Services also has announced 2016-17 prices, which are as follows:

• Motorcycle – $92 per year (increase of 26 cents per month). Still no charge if added as a vehicle on any other permit.
• Red – $181 per year (increase of 50 cents per month).
• Gray – $429 per year (increase of $1.08 per month).
• Central –$551 per year (increase of $1.42 per month).
• Pearson – $590 per year (increase of $1.92 per month).
• Annual garage – $608 per year (increase of $1.50 per month).

Registration for the 2016-17 academic year will be available online beginning the first Monday in August at the permits website.

In-person sales will begin during move-in weekend (Aug. 27-28) at the Parking Services office, which is located at 147 Perkins Student Center.
