University community reports recent appointments, books, service
For the Record provides information about recent professional activities of University of Delaware faculty, staff, students and alumni.
Recent appointments, books, presentations and service include the following:
Appointments
UD President Dennis Assanis and Provost Domenico Grasso appointed Laura Field, Donald J. Puglisi Professor of Finance, to a five-year term as chairperson of UD's Department of Finance beginning in July. The appointment comes upon the recommendation of Dean Bruce Weber of UD's Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, and with the unanimous advice of the finance faculty by a formal vote.
Books
George W. Luther, Maxwell P. and Mildred H. Harrington Professor of Marine Studies, is the author of a new book titled Inorganic Chemistry for Geochemistry and Environmental Sciences: Fundamentals and Applications. Published by John Wiley and Sons Inc., the book discusses the structure, bonding and reactivity of molecules and solids of environmental interest, bringing the reactivity of non-metals and metals to inorganic chemists, geochemists and environmental chemists from diverse fields. Luther is a distinguished faculty with a history of excellence in marine and environmental chemistry. He is a fellow of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Geophysical Union. He is a recipient of the Geochemical Society’s Clair C. Patterson Award, the ACS Division of Geochemistry Medal and UD’s highest faculty honor, the Francis Alison Award.
Presentations
Richard Davison, professor emeritus of English, will discuss two of America’s greatest poets, Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson, during a presentation at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 20, at the Newark Senior Center. Davison will read and discuss some of their key poetry, and will welcome discussion by members of the audience.
Service
William Sullivan, managing director of Marriott’s Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware, was cited in a Marriott On the Move blog post by Bill Marriott that applauds the campus hotel’s programs designed to assist families of autistic children. In addition to a Santa’s Mailbox, the hotel hosts the MarriOtters group in its pool.
