Newark Police announce second annual National Nite Out
University of Delaware Police will participate in the Newark Police Department’s second annual National Nite Out, scheduled from 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 2, on Academy Street between East Delaware Avenue and Main Street. The street will be closed to vehicular traffic during the event.
National Nite Out is an annual community-building campaign to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
At the free public event, UD Police will showcase K-9 officers, and children will be able to go into a police truck. University Police also will be playing beanbag toss, distributing a variety of handouts and letting people try on “drunk” goggles that simulate intoxication.
The Newark Police Department will showcase its SWAT truck, command post vehicle, motorcycles and evidence van. In addition, there will be a K-9 demonstration at 6:45 p.m. and a performance by Almost Acoustic, a duo featuring Newark Cpl. James Spadola and Morgan Wright.
The Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company will train people how to use fire extinguishers, and there will be a demonstration of vehicular extrication at 6:45 p.m.
The newly formed police support group Blue Line Strong will be collecting back-to-school supplies for deserving students and packing them into a Newark Police cruiser.
A bounce house will be featured, and throughout the evening, police officers will be grilling hot dogs. Ice cream from the UDairy Creamery also will be available.
