New University Writing Center program to assist doctoral candidates

A new University Writing Center program will begin this fall at the University of Delaware, offering those who are writing their dissertations a structured writing environment — and a free breakfast — one morning a week.

The “Dissertate Write Now!” program will meet from 8-10 a.m. Mondays during the semester.

Successful applicants, who must commit to attending all meetings, will start the week working in a productive community of writers, said Melissa Ianetta, director of the Writing Center and professor of English.

Participants will benefit from weekly structured writing time and proven strategies from successful writers. Breakfast will be available.

Ianetta said the new program draws on two highly successful UD writing initiatives: Write on Site, a weekly faculty writing group, and the Dissertation Boot Camps series, intensive writing workshops offered when regular classes are not in session.

“We’ve had such success with the dissertation boot camps in the winter and summer breaks that we want to find ways to bring this kind of productivity strategy to the academic year,” she said. “After all, graduate students are writing year round!”

The deadline for application to the program is Friday, Aug. 19. Interested Ph.D. candidates can find the application form here.
