Prestigious awards, presentations, appointments for UD’s Asarta

The year 2016 has just reached its halfway point, but it’s already been an eventful one for Carlos Asarta, associate professor of economics and director of the Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship (CEEE) at the University of Delaware.

Asarta’s Principles of Economics, the first-ever McGraw-Hill textbook to be built online from the ground up, was a finalist for the Best Postsecondary Learning Content Solution CODIE Award given annually by the Software and Information Industry Association.

In February, Asarta discussed Principles during his keynote address, “Teaching Digital-minded Students in Various Learning Environments,” at the 27th annual Robert Morris Conference on Teaching Economics: Instruction and Classroom Based Research.

Asarta also received the 2016 Global Forum Best Paper Award from the Management Education and Development (MED) division of the Academy of Management. The award is given to the paper that best creates the opportunity to address global issues of significance to management education.

“It is great to know that both industry and academia value my pedagogical and research contributions,” said Asarta, “I am honored to be recognized for doing what I love to do.”

His paper, “Key Institutions and Discipline Area Competencies in Business and Management Education Research,” was written with Charles J. Fornaciari, J.B. Arbaugh, Regina F. Bento, Alvin Hwang and Kathy Lund Dean.

Last month, Asarta presented “The Choice of Completion Deadlines for Online Assignments in Face-to-Face Principles of Economics Courses” at the American Economic Association Conference on Teaching and Research in Economic Education. At the conference, he also chaired a session, “Teaching Field Courses Issues,” and discussed a paper.

In March, Asarta presented “A New Conceptual Approach to Teaching Principles of Economics” at the Society of Economic Educators annual meeting. At this meeting, Asarta was elected vice president of the society, which is an invitation-only organization made up of scholars that work in economic education.

“Lerner College is thriving because of its dedicated, path-breaking faculty, and Dr. Asarta is an ideal example we are proud of,” said Bruce Weber, dean of UD’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics.

“The success and wide-reaching impact of Carlos’ work in economic education demonstrates how scholars at Lerner continue to shape the future of education in business and economics,” Weber added.
