Sept. 1: World of opportunities

Study Abroad and Global Studies Fair to be held in Trabant

On Thursday, Sept. 1, the University of Delaware’s Institute for Global Studies (IGS) and Center for Global and Area Studies (CGAS) will host the Fall Study Abroad and Global Studies Fair, to take place from 2-4 p.m. in Multipurpose Rooms A/B of the Trabant University Center.

All University of Delaware students are invited to explore more than 20 UD study abroad and alternative break programs that will take place during 2017 in locations ranging from Costa Rica to Copenhagen, and many more. In addition, representatives from Student Financial Services and IGS will be on hand to answer questions about financing study abroad programs and scholarship opportunities.

Students will also be able to venture through the tables to discover Area Studies majors and minors in African Studies, Asian Studies, European Studies, Islamic Studies, Jewish Studies, Latin American and Iberian Studies and a special lecture series offered as a part of the ARSC300 course, Issues in Global Studies.

Others from the Delaware Diplomats Program, English Language Institute and UD Fulbright Program will have information on ways to engage globally on campus and after graduating from UD.

For more information on global opportunities at UD, visit the IGS website and follow along @UDGlobal on Instagram and Twitter.

About the Institute for Global Studies

The Institute for Global Studies was created in 2009 to enhance the international dimensions of teaching, research and outreach at the University of Delaware. IGS provides leadership and support for programs and experiences that contribute to the education of informed, skilled, open-minded citizens of the world.

Best known for coordinating the University’s study abroad program, IGS also awards scholarships and grants to faculty and students for a number of global opportunities, and administers internationally-recognized State Department-sponsored programs such as the UD Fulbright Initiative, Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Student Leaders Institute, Mandela Washington Fellowship Program for Young African Leaders, and most recently the Study of the U.S. Institutes for Student Leaders on Women’s Leadership (SUSI-WL) program.

IGS sponsors such signature events as Global Month each fall and country-specific celebrations each spring.

IGS collaborates with other global partners on campus, including the Office for International Students and Scholars, the Confucius Institute and the Center for Global and Area Studies. In addition, IGS partners with Enrollment Management to coordinate the UD World Scholars Program.

About the Center for Global and Area Studies

The Center for Global and Area Studies (CGAS) is both a hub for global learning and a support center for international research. Bringing together faculty whose expertise spans disciplines and world regions, the CGAS promotes research that increases global awareness and fosters an academic community that is increasingly connected to the "global village."

The center houses cross-disciplinary programs that train students in the crucial skills needed for understanding global issues: culture, language, analysis, and experience with other cultures.

They prepare undergraduates to tackle the international topics that are constantly seen in the news cycle: globalization, multiculturalism, international business, cooperation and conflict resolution, poverty and the challenges of development, democratic development, migration, and environmental concerns, among others.

CGAS also hosts lecture series, offers small research grants, and sponsors other programs to cultivate a community-wide understanding of global issues.
