Glenn Carter, 3M communications executive, named UD vice president for communications and marketing

Glenn Carter, global marketing communications leader for the 3M Company in St. Paul, Minnesota, has been named vice president for communications and marketing at the University of Delaware, President Dennis Assanis announced today. His appointment is effective Sept. 6.

“Glenn Carter has an impressive combination of marketing and communications experience, as well as a strong record of building brand awareness with key audiences on a global level,” Assanis said. “I have great confidence in Glenn’s abilities to bring new perspectives and fresh insights as he and the University communications team work to share the accomplishments of this University and its people with the world. I look forward to his leadership in this important endeavor.”

Monica Taylor Lotty, vice president for development and alumni relations and chair of the search committee, said, “Glenn Carter impressed the search committee with his vision for innovative, strategic communications, his fresh approach to branding and marketing and his proven experience in connecting institutional messages with target audiences. I know he will be a great asset to this University and help move us to even greater levels of renown and excellence.”

“My thanks to Monica Taylor Lotty and the search committee for their dedicated service on this national search and to John Brennan for his role as interim vice president throughout this process,” Assanis added.

At 3M since 2001, Carter has a broad range of experience leading marketing and strategic communications initiatives. His responsibilities have included management and implementation of programs to foster stakeholder engagement, creative content development and leadership roles driving public relations, major sponsorships and executive communications.

“As soon as I stepped foot on campus at the University of Delaware, I couldn’t help but be inspired by the dynamic culture and incredible achievements of all the people and programs that this great institution has brought to the world,” said Carter. “I’m excited and honored to be part of this experience and to have a role in sharing its story.”

In his new position, Carter will report directly to the president, with responsibility for the vision, implementation and supervision of the University’s overarching communication operations, as well as its branding strategy and initiatives, visual identity and development of major institutional relationships. His primary goals include enhancing public recognition and advancing the image of the University at the local, state, national and global levels.

About Glenn Carter

Carter has served as global marketing communications leader in 3M’s Global Design department since 2014, with responsibility for enhancing brand awareness and the company’s reputation for design and innovation. From 2001-14, he held positions at 3M in the Corporate Communications Department, including senior manager of innovation communications, senior communications manager for consumer brands, and communications manager for 3M’s health care business.

During his career at 3M, he has led the integrated marketing communications strategy for the 3M corporate brand, managed public relations and media relations for key 3M businesses and brands, and overseen major sponsorship and marketing programs designed to advance 3M’s reputation for innovation, including a successful campaign at South by Southwest targeted directly to the millennial audience.

Before joining 3M, he was a senior account executive with the Abernathy MacGregor Group Inc., public affairs associate at the Charles A. Dana Foundation and public affairs and programs assistant at the Paley Center for Media, all in New York City.

A cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University with a degree in English, Carter earned his master of science degree in integrated marketing communications, with a specialty in corporate public relations, from Northwestern University.
