UD women’s tennis team, players recognized for academic excellence

The University of Delaware women’s tennis team was recognized recently by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as an All-Academic Team, while five Blue Hens also were honored for their hard work in the classroom during the 2015-16 season.

As a program, the UD women’s tennis has been acknowledged as an ITA All-Academic Team nine times since the program’s inception in 2002. Additionally, 19 Blue Hens have also been honored as ITA Scholar Athletes, with many earning multiple-year accolades.

“First off, congratulations to all of the collegiate student-athletes who created personal academic goals and achieved them this past year,” said UD head coach Laura Travis. “The academic recognition program that the ITA has in place is an effective platform for motivating and rewarding the pursuit of academic excellence. We start each new year celebrating the previous year’s academic successes and encourage our student-athletes to utilize this recognition as extra incentive for the upcoming season.”

Freshmen Sarah Hall and Sara Komer joined multi-year winners in seniors Denny LaMachia and Nataliya Naumova and and sophomore Amanda Studnicki as 2015-16 ITA Scholar Athletes.

LaMachia, a finance major, and Studnicki, an exercise science major, have each posted perfect cumulative 4.0 grade point averages in their time as UD students.

LaMachia graduated summa cum laude from the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics with a bachelor of science degree in finance in May. She has not exhausted her playing eligibility and will continue her collegiate career as a graduate student this coming season.

Naumova also graduated from the Lerner College in May with a bachelor of science degree in economics and international relations.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or above on a 4.00 scale. In order to earn ITA Scholar Athlete status, a student-athlete must be a varsity letter winner with a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year.
