UD Online / Distance Learning

The University's UD Online / Distance Learning program allows students to take University of Delaware courses using a variety of technologies. Distance students are able to access their courses any time and any place that is convenient to them. Courses follow the regular UD campus academic calendar for the fall, winter, spring and 7.5 week summer semesters. UD Online course requirements are the same as UD campus course requirements and are taught by UD faculty; therefore, there is no distinction on transcripts or diplomas between on-campus and UD Online courses and programs. Most courses have proctored exams. If a course has proctored exams, students will be required to go to a physical location to take course exams. To be successful in an online course a student needs to be self disciplined, well organized and have strong time management skills.

UD Online courses may include all or some of the following instructional delivery methods: videostreamed class lectures, video clips, audio components, guided readings, chatrooms, interactive web activities, and threaded discussions. In addition, instructors are available to assist students according to their course policy via email or by phone. A small number of courses require scheduled virtual class meetings using a microphone and headset, videoconferencing, or are completely self-directed. These course exceptions will be indicated in the course notes. Students will find easy step-by-step instructions to link to the University of Delaware computer network from home or office at: www.pcs.udel.edu/udonline/start.

It is required that all students test their course log-on access by the beginning of the semester. If students have technical difficulties viewing videostreamed lectures over the Internet, it may be possible to request instructional media as an alternative viewing option. Only courses with videostreamed lectures have this option. They are designated by stating "CDs or DVDs available upon request" in the course notes. Instructions on how to request instructional media will be provided to students in a welcome email or postcard after students register. For the optimal educational experience high speed Internet access is required for all UD Online courses.

We highly urge students to visit the following website which gives a detailed profile of each course, may include a sample of the course syllabus, the delivery method, and a course demonstration which allows students to check their computer and Internet connection to ensure course access.
