OUR HISTORY""

Why Study Abroad?

“Life-changing experience.”  “One of the best decisions I made at UD.”  These are typical responses when asking UD students about their time on study abroad.  But you may still wonder if study abroad makes sense for you, and if the experience will be worth the time, cost, or effort.  Perhaps you're not certain what benefits you can reap from an extended stay in a foreign country. Here are a few:

    • Develop global citizenship

      • Ability to see diverse approaches to global issues

      • Deeper understanding of other cultures and peoples

  • Learn life skills

              • Independence

              • Resilience/flexibility

              • Problem solving

  • Expand your horizons

  • Engage in self-discovery

  • Improve foreign language proficiency

  • Enhance your employment or career opportunities

  • Fulfill UD Discovery Learning requirement

  • Make lifelong friends & memories

At UD’s Institute for Global Studies, we recognize that a university education extends beyond the classroom.  We believe that studying abroad will help you develop skills and give you experiences that the on-campus classroom setting cannot provide, and prepare you to succeed in our interconnected world. Our programs are therefore designed to challenge students to step outside of their comfort zones - physically, academically, personally, and sometimes linguistically.

What are some of the reasons UD students participate in travel study programs?

Some motivations include learning the local language, discovering a new culture, eating delicious new foods, meeting other students with the same interests (both from UD and their host country), and building a life-long connection to their program’s site.

Additionally, studying and living in a foreign country requires resiliency and independence. Traveling tests individual boundaries. Sometimes that’s uncomfortable, but the experience brings out strengths in students that they didn’t know they had. Travel study experiences also help students develop essential leadership skills that will serve them through their time at UD, and in their careers.
