Group Counseling

Process-Oriented Groups

Process-oriented groups invite members to talk about their concerns without any planned topics or activities.  In these groups, members may talk about a variety of issues, such as loneliness, relationship problems, loss, struggles to feel good about themselves, balancing different stresses, academic challenges, and managing intense feelings.  Some process groups have specific themes (for example, body image concerns), while others are more general (for example, co-ed growth group or graduate student group).  Members may initially feel anxious about the lack of structure in a process-oriented group, but the leaders help members feel more comfortable and assist the group in starting.  As the group members get to know each other, many members appreciate the freedom of being able to decide how they want to use the time each week in group.
