Appointments to see a counselor may be made in person or by phone (302-831-2141). Your first contact with the Center will typically be a screening interview (assessment) in which you and the counselor make decisions about the type of help that would best meet your needs. Assessment appointments are made preferably in advance and are usually scheduled within a day or two after request to see a counselor. If you require immediate help because of psychological difficulties, you can ask to be seen on an emergency basis.
When you arrange your first appointment, you will be asked to arrive 20 minutes early to complete some forms about yourself and your concerns. When you come for the appointment, you will also receive information about our confidentiality policy. If you have any questions about these things, feel free to ask your counselor.
We utilize a short-term therapy format, an effective approach for the majority of students seeking help. It may include:
If your counselor recommends counseling at the Center, you will be informed as to how you will be contacted for subsequent appointments. If it appears that you would best be served by off-campus services, we will assist you in locating a more suitable resource.
