The Department of Art, part of a distinguished research and teaching university, believes that making art is an expansive process. The Department has a special responsibility to develop students' individual artistic practices as well as their critical understanding of art and design. We cultivate an inclusive atmosphere of diversity, discovery, experimentation, problem-solving, and creative thinking. The Department educates socially and culturally engaged artists and designers who comprehend and challenge definitions and assumptions with a wide spectrum of artistic production. Our graduates activate the future.
Eighteen full-time faculty members offer a broad program in fine and applied arts. These majors prepare students for such careers as studio artists, artists-in-residence, administrators in state and city art offices, gallery attendants, museum specialists, technical and digital photographers, and jewelry and clothing designers. Many fine artists continue their development in graduate programs in order to pursue a university teaching career. Students interested in the applied arts can major in visual communications to become graphic designers, web designers, illustrated or applied photographers. The employment outlook for jobs in the artistic fields varies with disciplines of specialization, individual talent, and motivation. Job opportunities are best in and around major metropolitan areas. Applied artists face keen competition without specialized training and superior ability.
