Fire damages Maintenance Center

Work underway to clean smoke damage, relocate staff

A fire on Tuesday evening, Jan. 30, damaged the University of Delaware Maintenance Center, located just west of the intersection of Academy Street and Lovett Avenue.

UD’s Environmental Health and Safety has begun clearing smoke damage from the building, which will remain closed for an indefinite period. Staff working in the building will be assigned to temporary space.

The Facilities Repair Request line at 302-831-1141 remains in operation with no interruption of service. It is temporarily operating out of the UD Police command center.

Fire companies from throughout the area responded to the fire shortly after 6 p.m., Tuesday, and it was extinguished by 9:30 p.m. The building was empty at the time of the fire, and no one was injured.

The Delaware state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
